During the meeting, which will be conducted in English, young people will be shown how to use comics as a tool to communicate their experiences in the field of volunteering and opportunities for international mobility for young people will be explored through programmes such as European Solidarity Corps and Erasmus Plus.

In addition, the guide How to survive a pandemic will be presented, a handbook co-created online by young people and IYELABs 2019/2020 promoters after the outbreak of the coronavirus to help other young people to promote and participate in volunteer projects at a local level based on the experiences lived in this first edition of IYELABs The guide contains information about the projects that have been designed by the young IYELABs, their adaptations after the Covid-19 outbreak and a manual for young people who want to set up social initiatives step by step. All participants taking part in this programme will receive the Youthpass Learning Validation Certificate.

As part of the IYE-Labs project, InCo is producing a series of podcasts to tell the experiences and stories of young people from Croatia, Spain, Italy and Turkey who decided to put their social inclusion skills into practice. The podcast will be produced in collaboration with Trento Poetry Slam, IncomolFetta, Impact Hub Zagreb, Xul Foundation and Dinamik Development Association.

The Garage of Ideas 2020 program is fully implemented online, consists of 3 modules and a final panel discussion. Each module lasts one week (2 hours / 120 minutes) during which participants learn about themselves and their own interests, their position in society, interesting ways to detect social problems (global and local) and define their own engagement in relation to the topic. They elaborate their project and present it at a panel discussion.

The panel discussion “Xmas seeds” is designed in such a way that each of the participants presents their idea using previously acquired skills, knowledge and insights. Each participant presents to all other participants but also to experienced actors from the business industry. The aim of the panel discussion is to connect top business actors with proactive, innovative and creative young minds, for the purpose of even more significant changes in society, but also for each individual change.

Applications are open until November 10, and online Program starts on November 16 until December 15 2020.

The project is free. It is co-financed by the European Union, and is implemented within the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.

Remedios will develop her experience in the fields of communication and interculturality. She wants to gain a deeper knowledge & experience on how #volunteering works at a EU level and especially on how organisations in this fieldwork on a daily basis. In this sense, our project for volunteering & social inclusion helped Remedios to change her self-perception of her and the world and she gained some interest in taking part in volunteering actions.

During the first session, on Tuesday 15 September, IYE-LABS partners addressed the most-technical aspects of the last stage of our common project. Oneco gave us all a feedback on the IYE-LABS’ current financial state and we had the opportunity to review all the foreseen deliverables for Autumn 2020. What is to say: the learned lessons document, the sustainability plans, the pilot project reports, the toolkit translations and the how to survive to a pandemic guide.

The second session (16 September) was aimed at planning the youth exchange and the final conference with policy-makers. Both events will not finally take place in-person, but we have to move them to an online format due again to COVID-19. IYE-LABS partners face the final stretch of our project aware of all the challenges that the pandemic posed us, but also full of energies to overcome them all and become a reference project for European volunteering.

Do you think it is important to talk about disability with local and international students? Why do you think that is?

Disability isn’t a popular topic among people which are not directly affected by it or which are not directly working in this sector, thus I think it is important to raise awareness particularly among students, which should be more open towards social issues. I think that oftentimes the lack of awareness within this sector makes the students feel indifferent and detached from people with disabilities, further enhancing their social isolation and marginalization especially when it comes to free-time activities.

During my Erasmus experience I found that abroad, people are much more open towards this topic than in Italy, especially in small cities and for this reason I wanted to be part of the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) which, among others, also manages projects connected to the topic of disability.

Do you feel accepted and included at an architectural level here in Trento? If yes, what do you think the strong points are? If not, what do you think it’s missing? 

The architectural inclusion is always very subjective and it also depends on the type and level of disability a person has. Based on my experience, I would say that Trento is a relatively accessible city. I personally had the luck of living in a student house in the city, few minutes by wheelchair from the Philosophy and Literature University which is a modern and completely accessible building.

I had few opportunities to use public transport in Trento and the experience wasn’t overall positive. In the city, quite a few places have limited or unaccessible spaces and it is particularly in these situations that people need to be supportive and open-minded. Making a city accessible to people with disabilities is not only about removing architectural barriers, which often times it isn’t possible, it is also about promoting a culture of being attentive and willing to support those in need.

Why do you think it is important for the local NGO’s in Trento to work together regarding the disability topic? What outcome do you think it would be possible from such cooperation? 

The Cooperation and collaboration between different entities, with different experiences and way of working, it allows achieving objectives which would be difficult to reach individually.

If the winter semester would start COVID free, would you be willing to contact Handicrea and try to organize the Ability Walk for the local students and the Erasmus students?

At the moment, due to this situation, I am studying remotely, but if the semester would start normally, I would be more than willing to find an available date to organize the Ability Walk.  Involving students in projects aimed at raising awareness of the difficulties we face, giving them the opportunity to put themselves in our shoes by moving themselves in a wheelchair it is a way to bring them closer to issues which they would otherwise not be able to understand.
