How to survive a pandemic
INSPIRATIONAL IDEAS
During the co-creation process, in which young IYE-LABs from 4 countries participated, we gathered information on initiatives implemented in communities across Europe related to Community action, especially to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
Frena la Curva
We will start with an initiative that was born from citizen labs in Spain, to face the challenges generated by the Covid-19 pandemic, the “Frena la curva” initiative.
Frena la Curva (FLC) is a citizen platform where volunteers, entrepreneurs, activists, social organizations, makers and laboratories of public and open innovation cooperate to organize social energy and civic resilience to the Covid-19 pandemic (coronavirus) by providing a civil society response complementary to that of government and essential public services.
Self-help neighbourhood networks, educational resources, support for teleworking and for combating the digital break, initiatives related to the use of masks or the promotion of responsible, organic and local production are some of the initiatives that can be consulted in this geolocated repository.
Plan A, una economía para la vida
After the health, social and economic impact caused by COVID-19, the Plan A, una economía para la vida initiative defends a new transformative economic model, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which prioritizes care of people and the planet.
More than a hundred business and social leaders, and 40 organisations, companies, social entities, NGOs and the media have already joined the ‘Plan A, Economy for Life’ initiative, coordinated and promoted by the NESI New Economy and Social Innovation Forum. You can sign the petition at the following link.
The COVID-19 Art Museum
The Covid Art Museum is the first museum for art born during COVID-19 crisis. To share contributions, people are invited to use the hashtag #CovidArtMuseum and submit their work in the link that follows: bit.ly/2yW1map.
Nutrire Trento Project
The Nutrire Trento project is a participatory process that aims to find innovative ways to “feed our city better”. Its specific objectives are the ones that follow: – to promote more informed consumption; – to raise awareness of more sustainable production; – to shorten the distance between producer and consumer, between city and countryside.
Facing a crisis like the coronavirus one, encouraging the local economy and keeping resources in the community helps to generate wealth.
Peace Innovators
Peace Innovators helps organisations take an innovative peacebuilding intervention from idea to pilot implementation. Projects coming out of these programs typically fall into three areas of technology use: data management, strategic communications and dialogue. In a social moment in which digitalization and media literacy are a must, we are inspired by initiatives like this one.

Fridays for Future
Fridays for future is a global climate strike movement. Their call for action sparked an international awakening, with students and activists uniting around the globe to protest outside their local parliaments and city halls. Along with other groups across the world, Fridays for Future is part of a hopeful new wave of change, inspiring millions of people to take action on the climate crisis: https://fridaysforfuture.org/what-we-do/who-we-are/.
The youth mobilization that this initiative has achieved is a reference that inspires us and we think it should be analyzed and taken into account.
