PILOT PROJECTS IN ITALY

HOW TO SURVIVE A PANDEMIC

Participants from Italy designed 3 projects, focusing mainly on the SDGs 4, 11, 12.

ABILITY WALK Project

SDG 4: Quality Education

Status: ADAPTED

Marcella came up with the idea of creating the “Ability Walk” project in order to contribute towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goal 4, focusing on understanding and exploring the architectural barriers that people in a wheelchair are experiencing everyday regarding their social and educational life during their study programs (university, Erasmus exchange students).

The project was initially designed to be implemented on 26th of February 2020, in Trento (Italy), targeting the erasmus international students in Trento, as well as the local community and local associations.

The resources needed to implement the project were mainly connected to the support of the Erasmus Student Network in terms of space and visibility (during the welcoming week of Erasmus exchange students), the support of the Handicrea association in terms of a speaker (architect), materials (wheelchairs, coffee and bisquits), space and visibility (meeting at their center).

The identified stakeholders that Marcella agreed that might be interested in participating and supporting the project are the Erasmus Student Network Trento, the Handicrea Association, local architects.

In order to tackle the issue of architectural barriers, Marcella decided to organize a walk around the city using a wheelchair to understand the difficulties people with motoric disabilities are facing daily, to organize a meeting with an architect that will share his commitment to improving the quaility of life and access to educational institutions of people with motoric disabilities and to organize a meeting with the Handicrea local organization to understand the available programs and challenges faced at a local level.  At the end of the activities, Marcella would do a visual report (photographies and videos) that will be used to disseminate the pilot project, as well as a series of testimonies from the participants that would be used during the social media campaign of the IYElabs project.

Through the activities implemented, the results of her pilot project would be an increased awareness regarding the difficulties people with motoric disabilities are facing daily, an increased understanding of how architecture can improve the quality of life and access to educational institutions of people with motoric disabilities and an increased awareness regarding existing local programs and organizations active in the field of inclusion of people with disabilities.

SDG 4 Quality Education: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

Target 4.5 By 2030, eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situations

Target 4.a Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, non-violent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all.

CRAFTS’N’TECH

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities

Status: ADAPTED

Leo came up with the idea of creating the “Crafts’n’tech” project in order to contribute towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goal 11, particularly preserving the cultural heritage of the Trentino province.

The project was initially designed to be implemented between March and June 2020, in Trento (Italy), targeting the young people and local artisans.

The resources needed to implement the project were mainly connected to the support from the local associations and local craftsmen.

The identified stakeholders that Leo agreed that might be interested in participating and supporting the project are the organizers of the Repair Cafè event and local organisations active in the field of cultural heritage.

In order to tackle the issue of connecting local artisans with young people interested in learning a specific type of craft or skill (weaving, carpentry, repairing certain items), preserving the cultural heritage of the area and facilitating an exchange of knowledge between young people and elder peoplle (crafts vs technological skills), Leo decided to create an instagram page/blog page/infopack with local artisans (including photographs, contacts and type of craft they can teach) and participate in the Repair Cafe event to get information about local repair services.

Through the activities implemented, the results of his pilot project would be an increased interest from young people in local crafts , more visibility to local craftsmen and local events and an online platform which connects young people to local craftsmen.

SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Target 11.4 Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

FOOD WASTE

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Status: ADAPTED

Giulia, Silvia F., Michele, Consuelo and Silvia M. came up with the idea of creating the “Food Waste” project in order to contribute towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goal 12, focusing on tackling food waste and raising awareness on the statistics and impact of the current food waste trends worldwide and in Italy.

The project was initially designed to be implemented between March and June 2020, in Trento (Italy), targeting local restaurants and the local community.

The resources needed to implement the project were mainly connected to support offered by NEST, to print informational materials (flyers) using their printers and to give them the space and technological tools to make a presentation in their campus about their pilot project. The participants would also contact the creators of the APPs to get their promotional materials that they can then share with the local community of Trento.

The identified stakeholders that Giulia, Silvia F., Michele, Consuelo and Silvia M. agreed that might be interested in participating and supporting the project are the NEST Cooperative and the Food Waste APPs such as Bring the food, Too Good to Go, Avanzi Popolo and other national APPs.

In order to support local restaurants into reducing their food waste, as well as facilitating the reduction of individual food waste, the participants decided to make a list of APPs and contact the designers to get more information and promotional materials, as well as make a list of local restaurants and share with them the database of APPs and how can they use it to reduce the food waste from their restaurants At the end of their activities, the participants would organize a public event at NEST to present their results.

Through the activities implemented, the results of their pilot project would be an increased awareness at a local level on available tools on food waste reduction as well as an Increased awareness among the university students regarding available tools on food waste reduction. As an output, there will be the database with APPs on food waste reduction available to access from anywhere in the world.

SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production: Ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns

Target 12.3 By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses
